Prins Kavelhof
New building using IP-to-the-room and mobility
The Prins Kavelhof site in Brasschaat features 192 serviced flats across 13 buildings (12 pavilions and a meeting room), all on one premises. A total solution has been implemented for a nurse-call system both on and off site.
Every one of the 192 service flats has been equipped with a voice solution. Therefore, nursing staff can speak hands-free with patients and ascertain their reason for calling via the intercom, making it possible to assess the severity of the situation and take appropriate action. The voice solution (iCall) has been integrated with both a fire-management and building-management system. In addition to the voice solution, each resident has a wireless medallion, which can be used to make a call when they are not in the immediate vicinity of a call point. As such, every resident can be assisted immediately in case of an emergency, wherever they happen to be on the premises.
Challenge
- Use of concrete (new construction)
- Fast response to (emergency) calls outside office hours
Result
- Total solution for nurse-call system both on and off site

Challenge
Since the project concerns a new building made predominantly of concrete, the challenge was to integrate a sufficiently powerful system, able to ensure a wireless connection between the different buildings. This meant that more central receivers were needed to optimize and guarantee the performance of iCall in each room. Furthermore, in order to be able to respond as quickly as possible to (emergency) calls, calls outside office hours and during the weekend were forwarded to an external support centre. If necessary, they would send someone to assist.
Solution
The solution for this project was an individual iCall programming in every unit. The integration of a wireless system ensures that nursing staff are immediately aware of the severity of the situation when a call comes in and they can easily verify the room from which the call is coming. In addition, residents can make a call at any time using their medallion, no matter where they are the premises. In this way, the nursing staff or service centre can quickly respond to the situation and take appropriate action.
Result
A total solution was provided with a nurse-call system that can be used both on and off site to respond appropriately and as quickly as possible to residents’ calls. Thanks to the flexibility of the system structure, it was possible to build on the existing data infrastructure. iCall is a unique nurse-call system that can bypass fibre-optic cables, therefore providing a continued wireless connectivity between systems.
